I’ve noticed that the last few episodes of ‘HIMYM‘ have largely taken place in the “home booth” at MacLaren’s. I know it’s the 21st century version of the couch at Central Perk, but the world of ‘Mother’ is a lot bigger than that these days. And, besides, Cobie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan aren’t pregnant anymore; there’s no need to hide their baby bumps under the table anymore.
That being said, it’s a great place for two of this show’s signature “bits” to start: 1) Absurd arguments, and 2) Incessant ball-busting. We saw both of these this week, with Ranjit thrown into the mix to make things more interesting. What really made this episode wasn’t just the Rabbit/Duck argument, though; it was the subtle direction shifts that made loyal viewers think Ted was going in one not so good direction, when he was really going in a worse — but more fun! — direction.
Seriously, before his double-date with Lil, Marshall, and Limber Girl, you had no idea that Ted had found Barney’s “magic phone” and decided to follow that lead. So when he and Robin exchanged “that look,” and Ted thought Limber Girl was a rabbit and not a duck, there must have been a part of you that was thinking, “Oh, crap. He’s not going back with Robin, is he?” That would have been a pretty big disaster for all involved. But, no, Ted’s baser instincts took over, and that was surprisingly refreshing.
The plot where Ted asks L&M to “arranged marriage me” was a bit of a red herring, wasn’t it? It was more there to help Marshall keep pressing Robin on the issue of her co-worker Don, and for Ted to introduce the much-better Duck/Rabbit concept. And, by the way, I do consider flavor and texture in the argument. Duck is succulent and delicious. Rabbit is bony and gamy. Duck wins. Oh, and Robin’s down comforter argument is pretty convincing, as well. Heck, you can even make a cartoony argument: Daffy is the unwitting stooge, but Bugs is the calculating manipulator. Sorry, Marshall, I’m with the majority on this one: Ducks are good, Rabbits are bad.
As for Don… he pulled The Naked Man. Only he lured Robin to his apartment with a bogus party invite instead of getting into her place. He said he read about it on some guy’s blog somewhere. Wonder if it was here? Anyway, he went from duck to rabbit back to duck, which means Robin’s “gonna marry him so freakin’ hard… right in the butt,” as Marshall put it. Or at least we’ll be seeing him around for a while. Good to see Robin have a complicated relationship and not pine after pencil-necks like she did last week.
Back on the topic of red herrings… it’s clever that we saw a replay of the Super Bowl promo with the number of Barney’s “magic phone” instead of the 877 number that was in the ad. Besides seeing Neil Patrick Harris’ tour de force of twitches and scared looks as Barney gets seduced by too many choices, there wasn’t much to this plot to hold on to. It almost seems like Bays and Thomas are accelerating Barn’s tomcatting ways in response to his time as Relationship Barney. But is it a reaction, with Barney catching up, or is it just Barn trying to outdo himself? Because these volume gags are getting a little insane.

It’s Valentine’s Day on How I Met Your Mother
and what better way to celebrate the occasion than to satisfy Barney’s insatiable quest for hot women and argue about the fine line between love and hate. This week’s episode kicks off with a quick follow-up to Barney’s Super Bowl stint in which he was holding up a sign with his phone number that says “Call Barney Stinson.” That little stint he pulled evidently transformed his phone into a magical phone— one that rings incessantly because an infinite number of chicks are trying to hook up with him.
It looks like Barney finally got what he wished for. The only problem is he’s having a hard time settling with a girl when he knows that there may be someone hotter than his date. So he picks up the phone and leaves behind the girl before he can close the deal each time.
Eventually Barney decides to get rid of the magic phone since it’s making him crazy. But Lily and Marshall manage to find a pretty good use for it as they use it to look for a girl to set up with Ted on Valentine’s Day. You see Ted has asked Lily and Marshall to fix him up for a blind date after being inspired by Ranjit’s arranged marriage story but they forgot about it. What Marshall and Lily didn’t know is that Ted had already found Barney’s phone before going on the Valentine’s Day date and now he’s pretty much hooked just like Barney.
Meanwhile, Robin heads to the party of her coworker Don, whom she claims to hate, for Valentine Day only to discover that he’s done the Naked Man seduction trick. It doesn’t work on Robin, though. If you recall, this trick only works two out of three times. However, she eventually sees him in a different light after he apologizes not just for being naked, but for all his past actions and for not treating her with respect. In the end, it’s safe to assume that Don goes from being a rabbit (someone she hates) to being a duck (someone she likes).

If anyone was getting nervous that Neil Patrick Harris’s new gig hosting the game show ‘The Cube‘ might mean his interest in ‘How I Met Your Mother’ was waning, worry no more. On Tuesday, Harris Tweeted the answer to a question no one has asked yet, that he is staying put on ‘HIMYM.’
Harris’s (subtly scatological) message, referring to ‘HIYMYM’ and ‘The Cube,’ both of which are CBS projects: “I’m never leaving HIMYM. That job rocks. This would just have me doing double duty on the Tiffany Network. (Huh, huh. I said double duty…)”
There would be no reason for Harris to leave, even though he has been popping up everywhere from ‘American Idol’ as a guest judge to hosting the Emmys, and even ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold.’ And you will more than likely see him on ‘Glee’ in May, and probably a dozen other places.
But ‘HIMYM’ is the gig that made Harris such an in-demand actor. Before the show, he was a former child TV star for ‘Doogie Howser, M.D.’ and a theater star of note. ‘HIMYM’ was a proving ground, of sorts, introducing a mass audience to Harris’s sharper comic instincts and guile. He’s been nominated for three Emmys for the show (and probably should have won at least once).
No one seems to appreciate this more than Harris, and no doubt CBS has to appreciate what they have in Harris. It would be surprising if either side walked away from the relationship anytime soon.

Wouldn’t everyone want to analyze their love lives with Jim Nantz?
Even if you haven’t been as lucky in the sack as Barney Stinson, having an accomplished play-by-play guy talk about the ups and downs of your romantic escapades lends things a bit of gravitas and class.

However the ‘HIMYM‘ writing team came up with the idea of how a nervous Barney recounts his perfect week in his own head, it was an inspired move, as it gave the episode the right narrative pull and really did put you in the position of a fan, pulling for him and making sure he didn’t get jinxed. Did I just say that word?
Nantz was a pretty good sport; you don’t usually see a guy at his level of blow-driedness spout phrases like “… and not a single fattie!” and not sound like he’s in on the joke. Though all I could think of when Nantz delivered some of his more supportive lines was his divorce and his much-younger girlfriend. Ah, well. That just proves I read The Big Lead and Deadspin just too damn much.
There was something for every member of the ‘Mother’ gang this week; in fact, I wish at least a couple of the stories were better developed. Didn’t you want to see more of Robin pining after the nerdy Smurf-loving date simply because he didn’t call her back? Didn’t you want to hear more about how it seemed like 4/5ths of the gang shared one toothbrush for the better part of a year — and that Ted, Marshall and Lily accidentally shared one for eight? In fact, didn’t you want to explore the whole “Marshall and Lily share a toothbrush and are OK with it?” storyline? Right, so did I.
The only story that didn’t need to be explored any more than it did was Ted’s torturing of poor Kuk Pu (or is is Kuk Poo?). It was a fun one-off joke and was treated as such. Though the Pu puns were pretty good: “She was down in the dumps.” “You smeared the Pu name.” “Did you get all the Pu out of your system?”
What all of it made for, though, was one hell of a bust-fest while the gang was watching Barney complete his perfect week. Watching the gang deflect at record rates was like watching a great ping-pong match; it was fast but fun to watch. Bays, Thomas and company have always been good at portraying the way friends bust on each other, and whenever one of those episodes come up, it’s always fun to watch.
Back to Barney. The whole quest for the Perfect Week could be the Best Barneyism
of the week, but I’m going to give it to a particular quote: “That woman nursing a Black Russian is about to chase it with a White American!”

Before she gets to be a cafeteria lady on “Glee“, Jennifer Lopez will stop by “How I Met Your Mother” first as a men handler. The CBS show will have the singer in an episode airing this March to play Anita Appleby, a no-nonsense author of self-help books that teach women how to train men into relationship machines through the power of denial.

“We couldn’t be more excited about Jennifer Lopez joining us on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER,” said Executive Producer and Co-Creator Carter Bays. “We’re looking forward to a week of revealing outfits and sexy dance moves the likes of which this show hasn’t seen since Regis Philbin guest starred.”
She will mostly share screen with Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders. When Smulders’ Robin tells Anita how Harris’ Barney acts toward women, she makes it her mission to “break” him.
Jennifer Lopez is also booked to appear on musical “Glee” as a woman who tends to McKinley High’s cafeteria. “I have a meeting with Jennifer Lopez in a couple weeks,” creator Ryan Murphy said Sunday, January 17 night. “She wants to come on. We want her to be a cafeteria lady.” The deal is not yet sealed and announced.

Jennifer Lopez will guest star on CBS’ comedy “How I Met Your Mother,” which was recently renewed for a sixth season.
In an episode slated to air in March, she will play Anita Appleby, a no-nonsense author of self-help books that teach women how to train men into relationship machines through the power of denial.
When Robin tells Anita how Barney acts toward women, she makes it her mission to “break” him.
“We’re looking forward to a week of revealing outfits and sexy dance moves the likes of which this show hasn’t seen since Regis Philbin guest starred,” “HIMYM” co-creator/exec producer Carter Bays said.
It was the guest appearance of another pop star/actress two years ago, Britney Spears, that spurred the show’s ascend in the ratings.
Lopez has been in talks with “HIMYM” producer 20th TV for a guest-starring gig on another series, Fox’s “Glee.”
