“How I Met Your Mother” bosses have some ideas to keep the spirit of the show alive even after the Mother is unveiled. During an intimate lunch with some news outlets, executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas revealed they have joked about the possibility of making a spin-off based on the comedy series.

“We’ve had conversations about rewinding back to 2005 and doing a series called ‘How I Met Your Father’,” Thomas said with a laugh. “From the perspective of what was happening with the Mother all those years. Occasionally, she’ll stumble through McLaren’s and no one will see her.”

Bays threw another possible idea that could be used after fans meet the titular mother. “One way to go is to finish the [mother] story at the end of Season 8, and then Season 9 is, ‘Oh, by the way kids, I left some stuff out…,’ ” he shared. “And then it’s just 24 little stories that took place over the course of the series here and there. Like, ‘Here’s something funny that happened in 2006.’ ”

Though Craig said these ideas could be more than just “jokes”, he and the whole team are now focusing on the original series as they are still figuring out whether to end the show in season eight or nine. “It’s a hard thing,” Bays chimed in. “Obviously, we don’t ever want to keep the show on longer than it needs to, just like we don’t want to end it before it should end. But it’s the best job any of us have ever had.”

Should “HIMYM” live beyond the currently ordered eighth season, Jason Segel is up to extend his gig on the show. “I really agree that I’d like to see the story come to its natural end, whether it’s 8 years or 9 years,” the Marshall depicter said when attending the TCA press tour. “I was so relieved when I found out there was an actual plan.”

As for how Lily and Marshall keep showing up on the series after the parents-to-be move to the suburbs, Bays teased, “We have a solution to that and you’ll see how it unfolds.” Thomas further detailed, “We’re definitely going to explore them realizing that it is a little bit isolating to be out in the suburbs, away from all their friends and the bar, and we’re going to see them deal with that in actually the next few episodes that will air. And I think we can say that it’s not necessarily a permanent stop.”

“46 Minutes” — Lily and Marshall officially move to the suburbs and realize that Lily’s bossy father refuses to move out of their house. Meanwhile, the gang adjusts to them moving by going to a strip club, on the 150th episode of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, Monday, Jan. 16 (8:00-8:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

“How I Met Your Mother” characters are going to have an emotional moment in an upcoming episode as some of them are making a huge transition in their life. In a photo for the January 16 outing, the gang shares a big hug before Marshall and Lily head to the suburbs.

“It’s another big transition in the lives of these characters we’ve all lived with and loved for seven years,” executive producer Craig Thomas tells TV Guide. However, it does not mean that the parents-to-be will no longer be seen hanging out with Ted, Robin and Barney.

Thomas further explains about the scene, “So within this fictional hug are some very real emotions: pride, gratitude, joy…and just a hint of ‘Holy, crap, we’ve been working really hard, when’s vacation gonna start already?’ ”

Called “46 Minutes”, the next “HIMYM” episode follows the gang who heads to a hotel in Washington, DC while they attend Marshall’s first football game without his father. Robin, Kevin and Ted decide to expose intense secrets about their relationships, while Lily’s teaching job is at-risk after a fire incident.

Robin is eager to welcome 2012 in the upcoming episode of “How I Met Your Mother“. Looking upset as she is forced to fill in for an inebriated news anchor, Cobie Smulders’ character says in the middle of her duty that she can’t do 2011 anymore.

Meanwhile, Barney and Ted open a bar called “Puzzles” which is located in Ted’s apartment. However, their new business may not last long since Kevin expresses his worry to Ted when people are getting rowdy, fighting and breaking things.

As for Marshall, he plans to visit his father’s graveside to carry on their tradition of tailgating after celebrating New Year’s Eve. Also in the episode, Barney gets slapped by at least three women.

“Tailgate” will air Monday, January 2 at 8/7c on CBS. After that, the show will take a break for a week before returning with its 150th outing on January 16.

Barney and Robin are dealing with the aftermath of their affair in an upcoming episode of “How I Met Your Mother“. After making out in a cab in the previous episode, they wake up in the same bed and realize that they have cheated on their own lovers.

Robin gets uncomfortable when her boyfriend Kevin and Barney’s girlfriend Nora are going to meet them at a bar. As confident as usual, Barney tells Robin to follow his lead, but he soon becomes worried that they know about the affair.

Whether or not Kevin learns that Robin cheated on him, Kal Penn who plays the therapist has hinted that the couple’s relationship will not stay for too much longer. “I would imagine at some point it will not be all smooth sailing for me and Robin,” he said before explaining, “Barney and Robin have long had a chemistry and have a whole backstory and history that probably won’t be able to be ignored forever.”

The next episode of “HIMYM” will air Monday, November 14 at 8/7c on CBS.
