I caught up with Neil Patrick Harris during Emmy week and the How I Met Your Mother star gave me some fun scoop on the Oct. 5 episode. “There’s a show coming up called Robin 101 where Barney seeks Professor Ted’s advice to learn more about Robin’s likes and dislikes to gain a deeper knowledge of her,” says Neil. “Ted, of course, knows all about Robin because he was kind of obsessed with her, whereas Barney just likes to stick things in places.”

Did Doogie actually just say that? Oh no!!

Neil goes on to say that his character comes to learn what Robin’s facial expressions mean. “The flared nostril, glazed over eyes look means: run!”

And how does Neil fare when it comes to reading people in his personal life? He says his skills as a magician have made him an amateur Mentalist of sorts. “I’m pretty good at picking up on things.”

Barney decides to return to his compulsive womanizing ways, after his brief foray into monogamy with Robin crashes and burns…

Fans of Barney and Robin can be happy to know that the show pretty much jumped right into discussing their relationship. We learn that despite trying to hide things from the overjoyed Lily, Barney and Robin have been having a secret relationship all summer. However, the two of them have been trying to avoid defining their relationship, hence hiding it from Lily. However, when Lily finds out, she’s determined to force the two to have the talk.

However, Barney is not willing to until Brad (the occasionally recurring friend of Marshall) asks Robin on a date and without the girlfriend title she has no excuse to turn him down. However, Barney shows up at their hockey date and ends up punching Brad! When the two return home, they end up being locked in a room by Lily and Marshall, until they define their relationship. They end up lying and calling each other boyfriend and girlfriend in order to get Lily to let them out. However, the two end the episode by heading to brunch (violating one of Barney’s rules of keeping a girl from becoming your girlfirned), and holding hands. All together now…. awww.

Meanwhile, Ted was preparing for his first day of teaching Architecture 101. He was nervous and trying to decide how to teach the class and ended up in the wrong room teaching in front of an Econ class. He eventually made it to the right classroom ten minutes late and ended up just being a professor and not worrying about style as much as the material. Apparently the mother was in that classroom… so did they mean Econ or Architecture 101? Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Bastards.

The day Ted, Marshall and Lily finally learn about Barney and Robin’s relationship has finally arrived! How I Met Your Mother returns tonight for its highly anticipated fifth season with an episode that’s fittingly entitled “Definitions.”

Ever since Barney told Robin how he feels about her in How I Met Your Mother’s fourth season finale, I’ve been imagining what will happen to these two if they got into a relationship, officially. Barney, the show’s resident playboy, isn’t exactly the type who would put a label on his affairs but this time, he’s seeing not just any other girl… it’s Robin!

Still, I’m having a hard time picturing Barney being all romantic and cheesy just because he’s with Robin now. But I’m not alone on this one. Barney himself is struggling with that thought and when the gang finds out about his relationship with Robin, both Barney and Robin hesitate to define what they have.

As you’d expect, Marshall and Lily encourage Barney to have “the talk” with Robin, even suggesting that it would only take five minutes and that he can have sex afterwards. Ted, on the other hand, is not in favor of having “the talk” because he simply believes that Robin is already Barney’s girlfriend. It’s a hilarious scene, which you can check out below, and it finds Barney defying the rules he created.

Meanwhile, Ted is anxious about teaching his first lecture at Columbia. He’s very nervous and is not used to speaking in front of so many people so he decides to maintain control of his students by releasing his “inner douche.” Unfortunately, this approach backfires miserably.

Lily’s father is coming to How I Met Your Mother, series creator Carter Bays tells TVGuide.com exclusively.

“We’re going to meet Lily’s dad later in the season. He hasn’t been cast yet,” Bays says. “It will sort of explain a lot about Lily: why she is the way she is, why she’s kind of a control freak.”

Avid fans will recall that Papa Aldrin was not seen at Lily and Marshall’s wedding in Season 2 — and there’s a reason for that, Bays says.

“He was not at the wedding. It’s a bit of an estranged relationship and he’s going to come back into her life,” Bays says. “We find out he wasn’t the best dad. It’s sort of at the root of why Marshall’s very gung-ho about having kids and Lily not so much.”

Lily’s dad will appear in the season’s Thanksgiving episode and Bays says the Mother crew is currently looking at “a lot of people” for the “fun part.”

Season 5 of How I Met Your Mother premieres Monday at 8/7c on CBS.
